The objective of this project is a wireless continuous monitoring and surveillance system for concentrations of radon gases in dwellings and workplaces. The use of this novel system will reduce the hazards caused by exposure to concentration of radon gase s above the recommended action limit. Dwellings and workplaces will be enabled to implement an automatic system for preventative measure of radon concentration. Furthermore, the national radiation protection agencies will have the necessary tool to set up an real time, on line, map of radon concentrations over large areas. The project will be performed in collaboration between Corentium AS, SINTEF Byggforsk and the Physics Institute at the University of Oslo. The main R&D challenge is to develop an opti mal solution for radon detection system combining high efficiency and low-power consumption with wire-less communication at low cost. The R&D will focus several simulations, optimization of the solid state sensor, and development of low-noise and low powe r ASIC, radon calculation algorithms and the system on a chip with sensor and electronics. The estimated market is more than 15 milllion dwellings / workplaces only in Scandinavia, Germany, France, UK and USA with radon gas concentration above the reco mmended level. This estimate is conservative because to find out those dwellings, it will be necessary to deploy a larger number of instruments than the expected number of dwellings above the recommended action limit. It is realistic to assume that an sys tem like the one proposed by Corentium, can have at least 5% of the market. The production costs will be below 200 NOK in high volumes, with an expected sales price in the range of 1.000 NOK. A 5% market share would provide a revenue close to 500 million NOKs only in those countries listed above. Corentium plan to have the new system on the market in 2012.
