A National Q-methodology Conference 2009, Stavanger, Norway

Tildelt: kr 95 999

In this project description we propose A National Q-methodology Conference in Stavanger in 2009. Q-method has previously been applied in Norwegian PhD-projects (Kvalsund, 1998; Thorsen, 2008), articles (Allgood, 1999; Kim, Kim Hesook Suzie, Schwartz-Barco tt, & Zucker, 2006), and master-theses (e.g. Berner, 2007; Rosell, 2008; Svennungsen, 2005; Tollaksen, 2005). The two main Norwegian Q-methodology research groups are located at Institute of Pedagogy at NTNU and at Center for Behavioral Research at the Un iverisity of Stavanger. Both institutes have previously arranged Q-conferences. Institute of Pedagogy at NTNU was responsible for the 22nd Annual International Q-conference in 2006, and Center for Behavioral Research arranged a small national Q-workshop i n 2007. During both conferences we have established informal research collaboration both nationally and internationally. However, the general acceptance and application of Q-methodology in Norway is still rather limited, probably due to limited knowledg e of its obvious strengths in the study of human subjectivity, and to a general lack of practical experience with the method in the social sciences. We argue that Q-methodology has great potential within social sciences. It offers a structured and efficie nt way of studying human subjectivity. A national Q-methodology conference could contribute to enhance knowledge and interest for the method. Furthermore, gathering together with National and International experts within Q-methodology could stimulate to r esearch networks enabling a more widespread use of Q-methodology. Several PhD projects in progress could benefit from this Q-conference (please see section labeled Dissemination of project results.)
