LATIN-AM-Latin-Amerika-programmet

A Norwegian-Chilean Cooperation project as a step to develop novel bio-based materials and sustainable energetic solutions in Latin America

Tildelt: kr 0,35 mill.

Latin America is rich in natural resources, including oil, mineral, sea products and forests. Within the forest industry, several countries are emerging with great potential. In the short term, Brazil and Chile will be in the best position to expand their forest production. Chile is one of the most emerging countries in South-America. The Chilean economy is based on several industry sectors, exporting goods such as copper, fish, fruits, chemicals, wine and paper and pulp. The forest industry is one of the most important industry sectors in Chile. However, Chile has a deficit with respect to energetic solutions. Natural gas is imported from Argentina, but the delivery is limited during the winter months. This may limit and reduce the industrial activities, being thus a major concern for Chilean government during the years to come. In addition, during winter the use of kerosene, firewood and charcoal as heating alternatives increases significantly. This contributes to air pollution, being a cause of several respiratory problems among infants and old people. The Norwegian pulp and paper industry and Norwegian research institutions have been working extensively during the last years for exploiting wood raw material in sustainable manners. Disintegration of wo od pulp fibres into their small components, i.e. the fibrils, has opened for new product applications. In addition, research has been performed for gaining knowledge about biofuel and bio-energy production from wood materials. Such competence is a great b asis for establishing an effective and fruitful cooperation with Latin American countries, emphasizing also on a suitable management of natural resources.
