Profitable bioenergy and paper production through innovative raw material handling and process integration (PROFIT)

The project aims at establishing innovative systems and technological solutions for integrated raw material handling and heat flows in a paper mill, waste combustion plant, pellet plant and a synthetic biofuel plant. Heat integration and use of excess was te energy from the paper mill and the waste combustion plant will be the basis for an energy efficient biofuel production. The raw material handling system shall ensure uniform wood chips with fewer knots for paper production, a knot fraction suitable for production of bioenergy or value-added chemicals and a smaller chip fraction suitable for solid or synthetic biofuel production. In addition, the total wood outtake shall increase by reducing top log dimensions and introducing log waste as the chip quali ty for paper production should be maintained by the raw material fractionation system. By using existing infrastructure for transport and logistics the additional wood outtake shall be sought in a cost-efficient manner.
