Globalized Help: American Non-Governmental Organizations and the Emergence of an International Relief Regime 1890 -1950

Exploring through a multi-perspective approach the interplay between U.S. based private non-governmental relief organisations such as the American Red Cross or the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) and the emergence of an international relief r egime during the core phase of America?s rise to global hegemony, the planned study aims to describe and evaluate both the exceptionality and the international/transnational complexity of the American experience and will contribute not only to the (pre-) and early history of American foreign aid but also to the history of the role of non-governmental organisations/global philanthropy in international affairs throughout first half of the twentieth century.
