Modeling the Egyptian Agricultural Foreign Trade: With Special Emphasis on the Egyptian Chinese Bilateral Trade

Developing agricultural foreign trade receives an increasing attention in Egyptian economic policy, while the country has recently placed emphasis on export development by enacting the Egyptian exports development strategy and the agricultural development strategy for up to 2017. Generally, the economic reasoning for these policies is founded on the export-led growth hypothesis, through partnerships and free trade agreements, which suggests that exports contribute to economic growth. In connection, underl ines the importance of China as a promising trading partner to Egypt. In terms of China and Egypt trade relations, the trade volume reached US$2.145 billion, in 2008, of which China's exports to Egypt were US$1.934 billion and imports from Egypt US$211 m illion. As for the two-way trade, Egypt was ranked China's fifth largest trading partner in Africa, 2008, while in terms of largest African importing market from china, Egypt ranked the third. The objectives of this project are; to fill the void of the li terature in this area; to analyze the current situation of Egyptian agricultural foreign trade; to use an econometric model to determine the factors influencing the demand for Egyptian exports in the international markets; to assess the competitive advant age of the Egyptian major exports in the international markets; to explore the Egypt-China bilateral trade and potential of promoting Egyptian exports to China; to determine the reasons behind the modest performance of Egyptian exports in the Chinese mark et; and to identify key steps that Egypt might take to improve its foreign trade performance and to enhance the access of its agricultural exports into Chinese market. The anticipated application potential of the project findings is to conclude some polic y recommendations improve the performance of Egyptian foreign trade and its trade with China. The outputs of the project will be disseminated through publication in a relevant scientific journal.
