Haraga: Theorizing Risk, Money and Moralities in Migration

Tildelt: kr 0,11 mill.

This project is focus on the phenomenon of the undocumented illegal migration of young Moroccans, the so-called haraga, from Tangiers to Europe. Haraga mostly come from poor shanty towns located in large cities such as Casablanca, Rabat or Marrakesh: they use variety of methods to enter Spain and then often move on to Schengen states: they may for example hide in lorries or ships? cargo hold. This project consists of three parts: the environment of origin of the haraga; their risk perception; and their in tegration into the host society. Generally, questions of globalization, transnationalism, risk perception, and identity will be discussed. I shall aim to study the course of the integration of the haraga into the diasporas and their subsequent existence i n the 'host' society. I have decided to focus on the Moroccan diaspora in Norway because it represents a relatively small and recognizable minority.
