Axis I and Axis II Psychiatric Disorders in Norwegian Twins: A Follow-Up Study

Tildelt: kr 7,9 mill.

The main aim of the project is to explore etiological factors underlying the development and co-occurrence of selected mental disorders (axis I disorders) and personality disorders (PDs) in early adulthood. Longitudinal twin studies are ideally suited to address these issues. We have previously assessed DSM-IV axis I disorders and PDs in a large population-based sample of young adult Norwegian twins, and now propose to collect follow-up data on major depression, anxiety- and substance use disorders and a selection of PDs as well as new data on normal personality traits and adverse life events. This will be the first study to include genetically informative data on both axis I disorders, PDs and normal personality. We will use this unique data set to inve stigate how genetic and environmental factors influence the stability and change in PDs and their longitudinal co-occurrence with axis I disorders. We will also estimate the degree to which the same etiological factors influence both PDs and normal person ality traits, and if liability factors for normal personality can account for the extensive co-occurrence between PDs and selected axis I disorders. Finally, we will explore how major environmental adversities and a limited number genes associated with in creased risk for mental disorders, contribute to the co-occurrence of PDs and axis I disorders. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with international research groups with extensive experience in the field. A deeper understanding of th e etiologic mechanisms underlying common mental disorders will have important implications for prevention and treatment. The results would also be uniquely informative to efforts currently under way to develop a new empirically based classification system s for mental disorders (DSM-V and ICD-11).
