Reframing the secular: Norwegian Muslims and vernacular practices of the secular

Tildelt: kr 2,6 mill.

'Reframing the secular: Norwegian Muslims an vernacular practices of the secular' is a proposed ethnographic study based on informal and semi-structured interviews of as well as participant observation among young Norwegians of Muslim background (aged 20- 35 years, and of both sexes) aimed at gathering empirical data on conceptions of the secular, secularism and secularity among them. These data will then be used in order to critically examine key tenets in a burgeoning theoretical literature on the secula r in anthropological literature. Anthropological research on this important topic has hitherto not been undertaken in Norway, and the study suggests a novel and original framework for approaching the study of the secular/secularity and secularism in late- modern Norway.
