Norwegian Atlantic Current Observatory

Tildelt: kr 18,0 mill.

We propose to establish an infrastructure consisting primarily of state-of-the-art ocean glider instruments which initially provide real time temperature and salinity profiles as well as drift velocity in the area off the mid-Norwegian shelf towards the P olar Front. These observations will be combined with moored current meters as reference in key location. There will also be benefit from combination with detailed time series observations from the newly funded Polarbuoy. Gliders will be available for us er defined science projects in the area off the mid-Norwegian shelf from the Svinøy to the Gimsly section centered on station M. Initially gliders will be set to operate along the Svinøy Section and across the Lofoten Basin down to 1000m every 8 hour. Th e gliders will be combined with real time data from reference mooring on the Svinøy section, providing continuity to 15 year time series. Data will be handled in a common facility which will provide rapid access to near real time data as well as integrat ed long term data sets.
