IUPAC 18th International Conference on Organic Synthesis

As outlined in the application for IUPAC Sponsorship (see attached Project description) the conference programme will give a broad and thorough overview of the current trends in organic synthesis. To secure the quality of the programme an outstanding Inte rnational Advisory Board has been appointed (see attached document entitled "Committees"; some members have been listed as Partners). The committe has been very active in the planning of the scientific programme, which is almost complete (see attached doc ument entitled "Plenary and Invited Speakers"). Due to the current trends in organic synthesis there will be a significant focus on synthetic methodology based on catalysis and catalytic processes. Topics like homogenous catalysis, chiral ligands, and or ganocatalysis will be extensively covered as will be organometallic chemistry, natural product synthesis, bioorgnaic chemistry, and various aspects of medicinal chemistry. Since organic synthesis is very important for the development in many other fields of science, several conference topics will be of interest to scientists working in other scientific disciplines such as pharmaceutical chemistry, material science, and nanotechnology. The IUPAC ICOS meetings constitute the top world series in organic syn thesis and it is therefore a requirement to have a good geographic distribution among the plenary and invited lecturers. This has been achieved; it is indeed noteworthy that lecturers will be delivered by outstanding scientists from at least 20 countries. This number is expected to increase when the short presentations for the parallell sessions (see attached document entitled "Congress Programme Overview") have been selected. The ICOS meeting has gained significant backing from the Norwegian organic-syn thesis community through the Working Party on Organic Chemistry in the Norwegian Chemical Society. Many of the members have agreed to join the National Committee and the Local Committee for the meeting.
