Solar Learning: Facilitating South-South-North transfer of social and technological innovations on solar energy

Tildelt: kr 0,34 mill.

The proposed workshop is part of an international, social science based research project funded by the Research Council of Norway and carried out by a group of researchers and practitioners from Norway, Kenya, India and Austria. This project will investig ate Indian experiences with implementation and social organisation of village solar PV power plants and their socio-economic impacts. Furthermore, the project will actively transfer experiences from India to Kenya on implementation and social organisation of community electricity supply, both monitoring and influencing the adaptation of the Indian experiences to Kenyan local contexts. The project will create a local power supply project in a Kenyan village, in a a context and gender sensitive manner. The workshop will contribute to strengtening both these parts of the research project. The workshop will thus contribute to south-south transfer of technological and social innovations and explore barriers and opportunities at the national and international l evel that are influencing the access, financing and implementation of community PV solar power plants in India and Kenya. The worskhop and the whole research project considers technological change as a social learning process, recognising that a whole rang e of societal factors influence the opportunities for people and communities to achieve technological and social changes. The interdisciplinary and international group of social scientists, technical solar energy experts, and stakeholders from development and solar energy agencies will complement each other in the investigation and knowledge sharing. The action research element facilitates the co-production of knowledge through interaction between the researchers and the involved local communities, implemen ting actors, NGO's and policy makers in the process of technology transfer, for which the workshop will be an important element.
