Development and Analysis of Vertically Averaged Models in Porous Media

Tildelt: kr 3,9 mill.

It is an acknowledged fact that simulation technology has to play an important role in providing capacity estimates, analyzing long term safety, and risk factors related to geological storage of CO2. However, the premise of this project is that current te chnologies used to model the dynamics of CO2 in the underground are not sufficiently developed to provide reliable estimates needed for specific projects to be approved. Based on benchmarks and recent results in the scientific literature, we consider meth ods that can provide estimates in an average sense to be promising technologies. The aim of the project is to develop vertically averaged models for CO2-migration, and through mathematical analysis provide increased confidence in such models. This analy sis will also provide further insights into dominating physical processes. A particular aim is to develop vertically averaged formulations that can be useful in analyzing Norwegian CO2-injection projects. The project is an extension to ongoing research in the project "Geological storage of CO2: Mathematical Modeling and Risk Assessment" (MatMoRA - project no: 178013). Education of 1 PhD and several master students is a core part of the project. Furthermore, the project will contribute to the international collaboration established in the MatMoRA-project.
