In-situ hydrocarbon reforming to hydrogen

Hydrogen has a great potential as an environmentally clean energy fuel. The limitations for wide use of hydrogen energy are related to hydrogen storage and transportation issues. Currently the processing of hydrocarbons for the production of hydrogen is a staged process including extraction, transport, processing, storage, followed by further transport and management of by-products such as CO2. Our project is aiming at opening a new immense source of clean energy for commercial use. Current experience wit h in situ combustion showed a possibility to generate hydrogen in-situ without any additives to the conventional air injection. For example during the bitumen recovery at Cold Lake deposit a 20 mole % content of hydrogen was detected in the production str eam. This project idea is to perform the hydrogen generation process directly in the hydrocarbon reservoir and implement a new concept of in situ hydrogen separation and storage. The reservoir will be converted to a high pressure/temperature hydrogen sto rage cell ready for extraction and transport. The proposed in-situ hydrogen generation process allows to reduce subsurface-surface transportation and to produce hydrogen in ecologically clean way. By removing hydrocarbon processing and transportation sta ges on the surface the energy used to hydrogen production is significantly reduced and CO2 is captured and stored in-situ. In the ?conventional? process capturing and storing CO2 from a power plant alone can increase the energy costs by up to 60%. In addi tion to cost savings, the emissions of green house gases during the production process are eliminated. The commercial application of in-situ hydrocarbon reforming is particularly relevant to - tight gas reservoirs, - depleted low permeable reservoirs, - coal bed methane deposits, - heavy oil and bitumen deposits. This project will demonstrate the concept validity, perform technical verification and develop the technology.
