CO2 OLGA Verification and Improvement Project

Numerical simulations are essential to a safe and effective design and operation of CO2 transport pipelines. No simulator in the market today is able to provide reliable predictions for all these simulation scenarios. Besides dedicated modeling work, the development of such a simulator requires high quality experimental data for validation purposes. In this project, we propose work that will contribute to filling vital knowledge gaps both on the modeling and experimental side, and thus bring us important steps closer to having a complete simulator for CO2 flow in pipelines. The dynamic multiphase flow simulator OLGA is in a unique position with respect to quickly becoming a helpful tool for the CO2 capture and storage (CCS) industry. As the market leadin g simulator for transient hydrocarbon pipeline flows, it already has a great deal of the numerical structure and models in place. SPT Group and IFE have long traditions for cooperating closely with the industry to solve demanding technological challenges . The main objective of the project will be to ensure that OLGA delivers high quality predictions of CO2 pipe flows. Moreover, the suggested research topics are well aligned with the recommended R&D needs for CO2 pipeline transport. Our goal is that this project can contribute to OLGA becoming an equally important tool for the realization of a world-wide CO2 pipeline network as it has been for the building of hydrocarbon pipelines over the last decades.
