Hydro Aluminium (HAL) believes that a strongly improved Hall-Heroult process for manufacturing primary aluminium will be competitive for several decades. HALs objective is to be the undisputed benchmark and the global leader in this process, by developing , implementing, and offering superior technology, economically and technically as well as environmentally. The present HAL Ultra Performance (HAL UP) initiative surpasses all previous technology ambitions, nationally as well as internationally. All cell d esign principles, material choices, and ways of operating the cell will have to be reconsidered. Energy reduction and recovery of heat will be key issues. Moreover, the cells will be ready for CO2 capture by having a more concentrated flue gas. The main c hallenges are believed to be related to reduction of the ohmic resistance, heat management, improved anodes, and better cell operation and control. Ohmic resistance comprises all parts of the cell. The anode-cathode distance needs to be reduced without compromising the current efficiency, and it seems necessary to take the slotted anode concept beyond the present state-of-the-art. New materials to be combined with or replace the steel parts of the electrodes must be developed and tested. Heat managemen t comprises methods and systems related to cooling, collecting, and transporting heat, in order to protect vital parts of the cell and utilise the heat to produce electricity or for other purposes. Anodes with high conductivity and low dust formation mu st be developed. More fundamental knowledge concerning the relationship between raw material properties, production methods, and performance is needed. Better operation and control is directed towards suppressing irregularities in the process, and a nov el control loop to obtain lower and more uniform ACD seems to be within reach. The results obtained in the project will be used as basis for early testing of concept prototypes and piloting.
