Human Ingenuity Research Project

Tildelt: kr 59 000

Human ingenuity is defined as the aptitude and ability to solve problems through experience, with originality and imagination (Hansen, 2008). Using life history research instruments this research will explore the determinants of human ingenuity, particul arly those that can be traced, or attributed, to learning in formal and informal education settings. Can ingenuity be identified? Taught? If so, how? The sample will consist of six to ten people identified as creative or clever. Each member of the sa mple will be interviewed about the sources or roots of imagination, creativity, and ingenuity in their lives. Where formal or informal education is identified as a factor, that educational experience will be documented. A portrait of each candidate will be prepared. Interview instruments developed and refined during a pilot study (2008) completed in Canada will be employed at the Faculty of Arts, Folk Culture, and Teacher Education, Telemark University College in Norway. The host will be Jostein Sandv en, Head, Department of Art and Design Education. This research has significance for education system reform, new knowledge/competence for industry, internationalization of Norwegian and Canadian research, and individual/group development.
