National network initiative in the area of HSE and ELSA aspects of nanomaterials: SafeNano Network (SNN)

Tildelt: kr 0,14 mill.

The SafeNano Network will provide a positive environment that promotes knowledge transfer and open discussion of ideas, challenges and concerns between research institutes, universities, industry, the government, consumer groups and NGOs across Norway (wh ole ?value chain? approach). It will offer a platform for a sustainable development of nanotechnology and promote implementation of new policies on nanomaterial safety. The network will create an underlying ethos where the aim is to determine how nanopar ticle production, use and disposal can be undertaken to ensure maximum safety throughout the product lifetime. As part of this approach, the physical and chemical properties which result in hazardous materials will be identified and then be used in the de velopment of safe materials in the future. Furthermore, it will help in the development of a national strategy for nanomaterial testing. The SafeNano Network will also provide a facility which enables like-minded scientists to easily identify and contact each other and encourage high quality research project proposals within ?Nanotech HSE? at both the national and international level. A close relationship with ELSA will lead to the development a national strategy on how to approach the current lack of kn owledge/uncertainty surrounding nanotechnology. The final goal for the network will be the creation of a well-founded public image for nanotechnology within Norway by involving organisations who represent public interest and actively engaging the media.
