CARCOM: Cooperative and Cognitive Vehicular Communications

The proposed project targets at "The Aurora mobility programme France-Norway" for a research exchange of young scientists between Simula Research Laboratory and ENSTA-ParisTech in the field of radio communications and its applications. Five of the involve d researchers are below the age of 34. One of the project participants is woman. The primary goals of this project are to promote the strong international cooperation between the research teams in Simula in Norway and ENSTA-ParisTech in France, enable com plimentary scientific understanding of joint problems, educate 2 Ph.D. students, and provide talent and competence for the local ICT. In CARCOM, we will address the challenges of reliability and response time in vehicular communications through the explo itation of cooperation, adaptivity, and cognition. The ultimate goal of this project is to synergize the advances of communications technologies and Intelligent Transporation Systems (ITS), fueling significant progress in making automobile operations safe r and more efficient. Specifically, the objectives of the project include the collaborative research and development of (1) new opportunistic and cooperative protocols for V2V/V2R communications; (2) a radically new communications paradigm cognitive radio enabled vehicular communications to significantly reduce data congestion by mitigating interference and dynamically accessing spectrum holes; (3) p2p-based data dissemination for efficient cooperation to enhance reliability and throughput; (4) cross-laye r design for resource optimization and ensuring reliability of data delivery; and (5) intelligent algorithms based on economic approaches to encourage the cooperation of data delivery and improve the system-wide robustness. The outcomes of this project w ill not only improve traffic safety, but also reduce transportation time and fuel consumption, which indicates an enormous significance of environmental-friendliness.
