Synthesis of resolvin D1 and analogs as potential anti-angiogenetic agents

Tildelt: kr 1,9 mill.

Epidemiological studies have linked fat fish consumption to lower rates of several diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Fish contains high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Recently, the potential efficacy of omega-3 PUFAs in the inhibition of tumor growth was reported, most likely by reducing the blood and nutrient flow to the cancer tumors. An attractive anti-cancer strategy could be accomplished if the flow of oxyge n and nutrients could be reduced. This would eventually starve the tumor. One lipid-based molecule derived from an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid that was reported to reduce the flow of oxygen and nutrients is resolvin. We will in this research projec t make resolvin and further study its ability to reduce the flow of oxygen and nutrients to cancer cells. These studies should provide useful information towards potentially new anti-cancer agents based on the chemical structure of resolvin.
