"The World Opera System": Development of a prototype for a distributed opera stage

Tildelt: kr 0,16 mill.

In the last decade, I have worked with several partners in Norway (Telemedicine / Tromsø Telemedicine Laboratory) and Music Technology labs in U.S.A. og Canada (Stanford, NYU og McGill ) on making a distributed document lab, having human agents in differe nt sites connected to each other through a network, as part of a general development of an experimental research tradition for Documentation Studies. During my stay as Visiting professor at UC-Berkeley in 2005-06 working on opera as a multimedia document, the idea of a distributed opera stage came up at the final workshop and the World opera project was initiated. It was very much based on the ideas of distributed music performance especially developed at CCRMA, Center for Computer Research in Music and A coustics at Stanford during the last 10-15 years. Since 2006 I have collaborated with professor Chris Chafe, Director of CCRMA, om this project, especially on the latency issues, but also on the other problems of making a distributed stage of high artisti c quality. This work has been intensified within the larger research project,VERDIONE, Virtually Enhanced Real-life synchronizeD Interaction - ON the Edge, funded by the VERDIKT program of the Norwegian Research council for the period of 2008-2012. Therefo re I would like to spend my sabbatical at CCRMA in Spring 2011, January 15 till June 15, with the purpose of working together with professor Chafe and his colleagues on formulating the basic elements in making a distributed stage performance, providing th e primary conditions for making a prototype of a distributed opera stage. The main method will be to run an experimental program comprising 4 steps of increasing complexity within the international world opera infrastructure in North America and Scandina via. These experiments are designed to explore the capabilities of current networked performance technologies and identify the critical elements for a successful distributed stage.
