Pilot Plant Facilities for Food Processing at Campus Ås

Tildelt: kr 28,5 mill.

Food is a prioritized area of research in Norway. Campus Ås is the national top competence centre for research and education within food science. The number of students at Ås will increase dramatically in the future, caused by the merger with Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and co-localization with the National Veterinary Institute. The Norwegian food and drink industry is the second largest industry in the country. Norwegian food industry is comprised of small- and medium sized companies that need R&D support to remain competitive and to stay innovative. The food and drink industry is meeting increased competition from abroad. In these contexts, it is of paramount importance to educate students and conduct internationally competitive research using the best facilities possible. The present pilot facilities for food processing are out-dated and must be upgraded to be able to offer both education and scientific research of high international quality and to meet future challenges. The updated pilot plant facilities for food processing and food safety will provide services that meet the current and future needs of the food industry. The objective of the project is to create state-of-the-art pilot plant facilities for foods to make Campus Ås a national and international outstanding food arena for process development, research, education and contract work for the industry. The existing facilities encompass four units for processing of milk and dairy products, meat and fish products, vegetables, berries and cereals. These four units will be upgraded. In addition, a pathogen pilot plant will be established for processing of all the foods above. The application regards upgrading of process equipment. The running costs are covered by the host institutions. The updated facilities are important regarding strengthening and further developing Campus Ås to an international centre of academic competence within strategically prioritized areas within the food sector.
