Digital oil

Digital oil (Doil) studerer fangst, lagring, analyse og visualering av informasjon knyttet til olje og gass industrien. Vi ser spesielt på informasjonsbehandling av brønner. Brønner - letebrønner, produksjonsbrønner, injeksjonsbrønner - er sentrale i svær t mange situasjoner. Særlig interessant for Doil er rutiner, heuristikker og taktikker undergrunnsmiljøene (dvs. geologer, geofysikere, reservoir-, produksjons- og prosessingeniører) benytter for å lete fram relevant historisk informasjon om brønnene. Enkelte brønner er en mannsalder gamle slik det å sirkle inn gammel informasjon som er aktuell/kritisk idag er ikke-trivielt; informasjonsmengden, ikke minst sensorbasert informasjon, er svært omfattende og raskt voksende.

Oil and gas operations are increasingly dependent on an extensive network of sensors for measurement and logging of relevant parameters (e.g. pressure, temperature, water and sand detection). The strong trend also on the Norwegian Continental Shelf towards unmanned subsea installations distributed in a network on the seabed makes senor-based information not only useful but absolutely necessary; subsea installations are run entirely at arm's length. Daily operations generate vast amounts of data in differe nt formats, time-scales and granularity throughout the lifecycle of an oil and gas well. The Digital oil (Doil) project proposal addresses the challenging research issue and pressing practical and economic concern of how to exploit the potential of ICT to obtain a sufficient overview of the subsea well to operate them in an efficient and safe manner. Doil targets the sub-surface community of geosciences (geologists, reservoir engineers, production engineers and geophysicists) and identifies (i) tactics for trusting sensor-based information, (ii) user-driven heuristics for generating overviews of the well lifecycle and (iii) a demonstrator for situated search of the full well lifecycle. Doil is organised around a mature research network with extensive experience with interactive modes of research with the full array of external partners (oil and gas companies, oil service companies and ICT vendors).
