Multiphase flows with viscous oil

Tildelt: kr 3,4 mill.

The project focus on selected multiphase flow experiments with viscous oils, for validation and improvements of flow models which are typically for use in pipeline design. Most of previously available data are for non-viscous systems. The project activities include laboratory preparations, improved instrumentation, execution of selected types of experiments and evaluation of the data in relation to flow models. The multiphase flow laboratory has been modified to cater for experiments targeting particular sub models in flow simulators (loop extension, multiple cameras, bubble injection system, new capacitance sensors). A new gamma 5 beam two energy densitometer has been designed and constructed. The experimental campaigns have covered both dynamic flows (severe slugging, oil-water flushing, bubble merging) and steady state flows (flow regime hysteresis, oil-water flows). The computational work has included testing of commercial models as well as programming of special models (dynamic friction models for U-tube, oil-water in inclined pipes, flow regime hysteresis). Experimental data give the basis for improving multiphase pipeline simulators. The project has contributed to this within the particular field of slug flow.

Background There are uncertainties related to multiphase pipe transport of vicsous oils with water and gas. Available design codes have been developed based on experimental data for unstable oil-water systems, for gas dominated systems and for low viscosi ty oil systems. Experiences with flow simulations on viscous systems indicate that further work is needed on extension of the experimental data base and on the associated modifications of closure models in the flow simulators. The field of three phase m ultiphase flow is large, this project focus on selected flow details of gas-liquid and oil-water flows at laminar or transitional flow conditions. Earlier work has largely been for turbulent flows. Objectives Perform selected experiments related to gas-liquid slug flow and to oil-water flows. Together with other available data (potentially from the Statoil laboratories) evaluate and suggest improvements in both steady state and dynamic flow models. Tasks - Laboratory preparations, including establ ishment of a two energy gamma densitometer - Experimental work on selected details in oil-water flows and in gas-liquid slug flows - Extending steady state point models and slug tracking models in relation to viscous systems - Reporting in publications
