Fundamental Effects of CO2 on Rock Properties

Tildelt: kr 9,5 mill.

The main objective of this project is to provide better understanding of the fundamental effects of CO2 injection on geomechanical and sealing properties of storage reservoir rock and caprock. Two areas will be investigated 1) near-well stress changes aff ecting CO2 injectivity and 2) flow and wetting properties of partly sealing rock. 1) Thermally induced stresses and cycles of CO2 injection & shut-in may cause severe loss of injectivity in the reservoir. Triaxial experiments on sandstone plugs /cement/c asing plus numerical simulations will shed light on the risk of fractures in the near-well region. The risk fault reactivation will also be addressed. In addition burial scenarios for thin layers will be investigated, leading to intra-reservoir fracturing and characteristic flow of CO2 across shale barriers. 2) Flow of CO2 through a partly sealing barrier like intra-formation low permeable layers or caprock depends on e.g. permeability and capillary threshold. The latter is strongly related to the wettin g condition of the rock. Most lab tests for rock wettability are directed at oil-brine- reservoir rock systems, and may not be suitable for more reactive CO2-brine-tight rock systems. It is intended to verify possible wettability alterations of relevant r ock due to exposure to CO2 and brine at relevant pressures and temperatures. The studies will include how wettability alteration affects the sealing characteristics and leakage rates of low permeable barrier rock. The relations between rock surface minera ls and wetting conditions also will be investigated. This is a joint project between SINTEF Petroleum Research and BGS, GEUS, NGU and NTNU. These research institutes have been working together in BIGCCS on CO2 storage and will contribute their key compet ences to this project. Co-operation will also be established with the MATMORA project 215641 and a postdoc candidate at NTNU will be engaged. The BIGCCS external partners will be engaged as industrial partners
