Support for International cooperation on sustainable sea farming with Canada,China and New Zealand.

SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture (SFH) has in recent years, emphasized the development of good relationships with research partners in China, Canada and New Zealand. The present proposal is a preparatory project for a larger grant proposal to develop a co mmon project between partners within these three countries and which will be led by SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture(SFH) and is planned to be submitted in the Havbruksprogramet or related programs next year. The project will consider the design of larg e scale fish, mussel and algae farms with special focus on site optimization - ecological impact - limit of spreading diseases and use of nutrients. It will help in developing new and more sustainable ways of farming fish mussel and algae. This collaborat ion project will bring together different expertises in these fields. The researchers from Dalhousie University in Canada (Department of Oceanography), Prof Jonathan Grant, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China (Department of Ocean Engineering) Prof Shix iao Fu and NIWA in New Zealand (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd) Dr Craig Stevens will be respectively the main contacts person in these foreign partners. SFH looks at Dalhousie University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and NIWA as strategic research partners in the respective countries, and aims to strengthen the good working relationship in the years to come with them.
