As a technology-based international energy company Statoil ASA has an ambition to be an important player in the biofuel market. Statoil's wants to contribute to the development of advanced biofuels, enabling reductions in Green House Gas emissions. The EU renewable energy directive target that renewable energy will reach a 10% share in the transport sector by 2020. Also the International Energy Agency envisions dramatic increase of biofuels as a transport fuel by 2050. The aim with this project is to deve lop novel and innovative fermentation and separation technology for cost-effective second generation biobutanol production and integrate these into the production value chain for lignocellulosic biomass to biobutanol. Butanol has several advantages compar ed to e.g. ethanol as a fuel such as higher energy density, it can be blended into gasoline at higher concentrations, it is better suited to current vehicle and engine technologies as well as existing fuel supply infrastructure. Other aspects are lower em issions of VOC. For these reasons the interest in biobutanol production has increased over the last years. The main challenges concerning ABE fermentation are high feedstock costs, fermentation inhibitors, low butanol productivity and hence energy demand ing processes for solvent recovery. Through this project Statoil will look at technologies to produce biobutanol economically from low cost biomass. If successfull, the proposed technology will offer Statoil potential business opportunities in a new and b ig market.
