Style and Modernity. Unity, Multiplicity, and Expressive States in the Music of György Ligeti

Tildelt: kr 2,8 mill.

The works of composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) each display a level of innovation and a unique form. Despite the contrastive expressive nature of these works, each is nevertheless unmistakably Ligeti. This project will suggest a new approach to understan ding how Ligeti's works form links in the chain of his stylistic evolution. Furthermore, my proposed study of Ligeti's compositional style holds the potential to inject revitalised energy into the broader discourses on modernist music. Ligeti's project se emingly transgresses the mutually exclusive aesthetic categories frequently applied to understanding postwar musical modernism. By demonstrating the underlying aesthetic agenda in his music that challenges these categories, a means to understand a great m any other repertories emerges. This project will be of significance to wider spheres of modernist musical analysis and aesthetics in which there is no consensus as to how to deal with the plethora of diverse forms and genres. Mine will not be an attem pt to establish an all-encompassing analytical framework, as style and the processes of evolution involved in its fermentation are not, as I will argue, accessible in purely quantatifiable terms. Emphasis will instead be placed on analysis in context and how aspects of stylistic trajectory might be considered responses to wider issues. This project will contribute new perspectives on how musical style can provide valuable insight into aspects of subjectivity, intersubjectivity, judgement, and taste, vital in our everyday lives. As such, this project offers specific socio-cultural benefits. A greater understanding of the nature of difference - as opposed to parity, ambiguity, and the inherent malleability of signs, needs underscoring in a contemporary clim ate in which the humanities compete with the applied sciences and the immediate material and technological benefits that they offer.
