RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN OF RENEWABLE ENERGY RESEARCH IN CEDREN

Tildelt: kr 4,4 mill.

Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy (CEDREN) fekk innvilga ein søknad om pengar til vitskapleg infrastruktur i siste søknadsrunde. Søknaden illustrerer breidda i CEDREN sine aktivitetar. Her bygger dermed CEDREN vidare på tidlegare investeringar for å gjere desse enno meir funksjonelle.

The centre for environmental design of renewable energy (CEDREN) has been in operation since 2009 as one of the Norwegian Research Councils centres of environment friendly energy research. CEDREN carries out interdisciplinary research on a wide range of t opics concerned with environmental impacts of renewable energy and impact mitigation. The current application covers five central research areas within CEDREN and the host institutions, and it is divided into five separate packages. The total application will provide the necessary means to further develop current centre research activities, but even more important it will provide the means to develop new research objectives and to meet challenges of the future. The new TDR- and GPS data loggers will mak e it possible to study habitat of diving seabirds at a scale which is never before carried out, and the research therefore has a potential to provide state of the art knowledge on seabird behaviour. It will be applied to wind turbine research. The 3D te lemetry equipment will make it possible to accurately postition fish in three dimensional space using acoustic methods. It will be applied to study hydropower intakes and in the design of fish passage structures and fish fences. The tomographic PIV will b e used in the hydraulic laboratory to study flow phenomena in flumes and scale models, such as hydropower intakes, spillways and natural/vegetated channels. It will be applied to study flow around hydropower structures and in channels with fluctuating flo w. The evaporation measurement instrumentation will provide data on evaporation (H2O) and CO2 flux at a high mountain site in the Nea-Nidelva supersite. It will be applied for hydrological model development and in water consumption/water footprint studie s. The multi beam sonar will greatly enhance the ability to collect bathymetric data for modelling rivers and lakes. It will be applied to modelling fluctuating flow and sediments in rivers and lakes.
