SSF-Svalbard Science Forum

1st Science-Industry platform on expedition cruise tourism in Svalbard

Tildelt: kr 0,23 mill.

Organising a Science-Industry platform workshop on expedition cruise tourism in Svalbard would contribute to fulfilling SSF strategic objectives by exploring and implementing strategies for funding and coordination of scientific research on an important e conomic sector in Svalbard, which increasingly interacts with other scientific programmes carried out on the archipelago, and entails substantial environmental, social, economic and regulatory relevance. The workshop aims at providing an overview of the f ragmented research projects carried out in the field of expedition cruising and initiating a scientific programme endorsed both by the science community and the industry. These two aims of the workshop promote the interests of tourism researchers, as well as the wider science community on Svalbard, and influence how scientific activities in the field of expedition cruising around Svalbard will be undertaken in the future. Expected results will be a reduction in overlaps and major research gaps between pro jects by a more coordinated and programmatic approach towards research, as well as a more complete and comprehensive perspective on the wide-ranging effects Svalbards marine and terrestrial ecosystems, residential population and scientific communities, an d the policies needed to ensure a sustainable expedition cruise sector. Furthermore, the workshop will enable the SSF to reach out to the more fragmented polar tourism research community, which is not part of the regular Svalbard scientific community.
