Timing of ecological processes in Spitsbergen fjords - SpitsEco

Tildelt: kr 0,90 mill.

Through the ARCTOS network (http://www.arctosresearch.net/), Norwegian and Russian scientist has developed a successful long lasting collaboration. Russian scientists and PhD students has participated in a number of projects such as PanAME (IPY project 26 ), Cleopatra (NFR funded 2007-2011), and the ice edge programme (industry funded - http://www.iceedge.no/). Russian PhD students has also participated in the ARCTOS initiated Young Scientist Forum (http://ysf.arcticfrontiers.com/) and many smaller arctic research projects which are running as a part of the UNIS and University of Tromsø teaching cruises within Arctic and Svalbard waters. SpitsEco will enable Russian scientist, PhD and master students to actively take part in the two recently (2012) funded NFR projects Circa and CLEOPATRA II. By defining a subproject that rests directly upon the activities carried out in these two projects, we not only create significant added value and synergies by taking advantage of ongoing activity, we also expand the s cope of these two previously named projects without huge extra costs. Finally, the project is highly relevant for the Polres call, as it both facilitate close research cooperation, focuses on Svalbard and adjacent waters as well as providing a opportunity to inter-calibrate sampling techniques and data procurement on both Barentsburg, Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund.
