Demography of geographical range limits of tundra plants in a changing climate, RiS ID 6174

Tildelt: kr 21 505

This project will add to an existing study of the geographical ranges limits of a key climate indicator species, the tundra cushion plant Silene acaulis, across its latitudinal range in Europe. Existing sites from Sweden to Spain reach the southern range limit of the species, but adding sites in Svalbard, the plant's northern limit in Europe, would then cover the entire latitudinal range. A demographic study will be performed to look for evidence of decline in southern populations and increase in northe rn ones, as a possible sign of an impending northward range shift. Field experiments combining warming with open-top chambers and removal of neighboring plants will measure the direct and indirect (mediated through competition or facilitation) effects of climate warming on the focal species.
