Norwegian Offshore Wind Energy Research Infrastructure - Offshore Boundary Layer Observatory (OBLO)

Tildelt: kr 21,0 mill.

no changes from last year

The Offshore Boundary Layer Observatory (OBLO) provides advanced meteorological and oceanographic instrumentation and with this a mobile and flexible infrastructure for the provision of high-quality data sets on: a) the state of the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layer with particular focus on specific off-shore conditions, that are required for e.g. production estimates and the estimation of the resulting atmospheric and oceanic forcing on the foundation, tower and rotor structures for offshore wind energy production; b) the interaction of the atmospheric boundary layer with single turbines and wind farms, with particular focus on near- and far-wake effects of the forcing on the structures for strength and fatigue evaluation; and c) the potential impact of wind park induced changes in the upper ocean mixing, one important issue for potential environmental impact of offshore wind energy installations. The available instrumentation can in addition be used for a wide range of atmospheric and oceanographic boundary layer observations with benefit for basic and applied research.
