International Workshop on Antarctic Ice Rises

We propose holding a workshop between August 26th and 29th, 2013, in Tromsø. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) endorsed this workshop and provided funding of 10k USD. Co-sponsorship is confirmed from WCRP Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Project and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS). We anticipate ~40 participants from multiple disciplines and nations. The workshop will have four sessions: (1) impact of ice rises on Antarctic ice sheet mass balance and global sea le vel, (2) evolution of ice rises, (3) geologic and oceanographic controls of ice rises, and (4) paleoclimate using ice cores drilled at ice rises. There are no parallel sessions so that all participants will be involved in the multi-disciplinary discussion s which will help to develop a community-shared understanding of all sciences related to the ice rises. A poster session will be held to encourage participants to discuss projects in detail. A white paper on the current state of knowledge and future resea rch directions of ice-rise research will be developed and presented to the larger cryosphere community. The workshop will also provide a forum for the professional development of early-career researchers. This forum will be open to all early-career resear chers in Tromsø.
