The purpose of the project Societal conditions for language change is to build on the possibilities that real time studies offer, with a particular focus on how different macro-level societal conditions influence language change differently. In historical linguistics it has always been common to refer to various influencing factors when explaining language change, but one has rarely had an opportunity to use comparable empirical data to qualify theoretical assertions. Now the situation has changed and we can develop a historical sociolinguistics that may improve historical linguistics. We plan two exploratory workshops with the intention of developing the common platform of an interdisciplinary and inter-Nordic collaboration, leading to either a common N ordic project or to individual national projects with a common methodology and design. EW1 (autumn 2014): Societies and linguistic change. State of the art - theoretically EW2 (spring 2015): Changing societies and language change. Methodological approac hes and possible project designs Research questions (the linguistic perspective) -How can linguistic structure influence the direction and speed of language change? -How can specific changes in societal structure form conditions with an explanatory powe r for language change? -What is the role of cultural factors in linguistic change? -What types of societies create the best conditions for linguistic innovations? The Nordic communities provide us with a unique and ideal sociolinguistic laboratory, in wh ich much of the social, cultural and linguistic situation is the same but at the same time so different that we can focus on specific parameters that are of theoretical interest. At the same time there is a high degree of mutual knowledge between our nat ional communities, which increase the efficiency of scholarly discussion and collaboration. We have highly qualified research communities giving optimal conditions for developing insights of international interest.
