Halocarbon metric workshop: Scientific updates and reduction of uncertainties

Tildelt: kr 40 153

While some of the halocarbon gases present in the atmosphere (e.g., chlorofluorocarbons - CFCs) lead to depletion of stratospheric ozone, many of them are strong greenhouse gases that have substantial impacts on radiative forcing of climate change. Their impact on climate varies considerably, depending specifically on the atmospheric lifetime and radiative forcing efficiency of each compound. To set restrictions on emissions for the purpose of mitigating climate change, it is important to have adequate kn owledge about the properties of each gas to derive their climate impact, which is normally quantified in terms of metrics, such as Global Warming Potentials (GWPs). A recent comprehensive study, partly financed by Klif, of GWPs for halocarbons and relate d compounds has recently been completed (Hodnebrog et al., 2013). Although the radiative efficiencies were thoroughly reviewed for a total of 223 compounds, the list of halocarbons is far from complete. Knowledge on additional compounds is continuously ap pearing in the literature, and new studies provide enhanced knowledge on existing compounds. We aim to bring together international experts in this field for a workshop in Oslo to plan the continuation and expansion of the recently performed study. The m ain goal of the workshop will be to identify research needs within the field of halocarbon metrics, and make concrete plans of how these needs can be met. Several ideas are already on the agenda and include; quantification and reduction of uncertainties, improving the method for radiative forcing calculations, revising lifetime estimations for a number of gases, and establishing and updating an online database with metrics and input data for all available compounds.
