support on ENVIronmental salmon FARMing with Canada, China, Japan and Australia

Tildelt: kr 0,30 mill.

The present proposal is a preparatory project for possible two larger grant proposals to develop a common projects between partners within 4 countries (China, Canada, Japan and Australia) and which will be led by SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture(SFA). We aim to submit these project applications in the HAV21 or related programs next year. The two project ideas are: 1) Offshore submerged fish farming with focus on appropriate technologies for the cage, farm integrity and feed distribution. 2) Limitations of spreading of infectious diseases and Environmental impact: to limit the use of drugs to control diseases, to look at strategies to prevent diseases, to assess the short and long term cost benefit of an intensive aquaculture system that is prone to infe ctious disease outbreaks and treatments, to limit the waste from salmonid commercial feed and farming operations. This will be done by gathering expertise in Flow hydrodynamics, Large and small scale simulation , aquatic animal diseases and Environmental Science for Aquaculture These two different large projects are considered together because most of relevant partners to be visited can contribute to both projects. Therefore,it is sought a common establishment support project in order to reduce the tota l costs. This establishment support project will bring together different expertise in these fields. The researchers from University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Canada (Prof Revie), University of Tokyo in Japan (Prof Daisuke Kitazawa), Kinki Univer sity in Japan (Prof Tsutomu Takagi), Zhejiang Ocean University in China (Vice Dean Dr. Fukun Gui) and SARDI in Australia (Prof John Middelton) will be respectively the main contact persons in these foreign partners. SFA looks at UPEI, University of Toky o, Kinki University, Zhejiang Ocean University and SARDI as strategic research partners in the respective countries, and aims to strengthen research collaboration with them in the years to come.
