PhD research visit at Stern school of business

The research project is a five month stay at Stern School of Business at New York University for economics PhD student Kristoffer Midttømme from the University of Oslo. The stay is a part of the research work of my doctoral studies, and the funds I am app lying for will cover increased living expenses for my family and myself. I study how network effects affect policy makers whose aim it is to correct other market failures. Network effects are said to exist when the utility to a consumer of consuming a goo d is higher, the more consumers who are consuming the same good. Consider for instance the market for environmental friendly cars. There are few fuel stations for hydrogen cars because there are few hydrogen cars. And no one is willing to buy hydrogen car s because there doesn't exist a large network of hydrogen fuel stations. Is this a sound economic reason to subsidize such hydrogen cars, or will this attempt be countered by market forces? Doing work in theoretical economics, I ask these questions within state of the art dynamic oligopoly models. While at Stern, I want to complete the paper I am currently working on, and make it ready for journal submission. And I want to get started on my two final research papers. I have been invited to Stern by Prof. Luis Cabral, a leading scholar in my field. The paper I am to finalize is a direct extension of one of his papers, and he has a research program that my work sits right in the middle of. This means that at Stern, I find the best researchers and students within my field. They can help me clarify my research questions, refine my ideas and revise my current paper. They will also provide me with a great start on my last two papers. Hopefully, I can form a lasting network of colleagues. Stern hosts excellent seminar series in industrial economics, and they give great phd courses not available in Oslo. I want to take part in this thriving environment.
