Minority language standards in Scotland (Scots and Gaelic): Language inequality, nationalism and the promotion of linguistic diversity.

Tildelt: kr 52 000

The mobility grant will allow afford me a unique opportunity to analyse the ethnographic data I am set to collect in Scotland in the autumn of 2013, in collaboration with Dr A. Jaffe, an internationally acclaimed authority in the field of linguistic anthr opology. This research is part of the STANDARDS project (dir. Pia Lane) and looks at both Scots and Gaelic in Scotland and investigates how issues of minority language standards are dealt with in a country that is officially aspiring for independence (fr om the United Kingdom) and where issues of national identity are instrumental in achieving this. The main questions I will seek to answer while at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) are the following: - How are language standards created and i ssues of standard raised, circulated, contested or accepted, by whom, and in what conditions? - Who gains from the gradual establishment of the minority languages of Scotland in the current nationalist context? What new social categories are created in t he process, and who is excluded from them? Data transcription choices and interpretation are two of the main challenging dimensions in linguistic anthropological analysis, two domains which Dr Jaffe is outstandingly known for. The work at CSULB will affor d me an exciting opportunity to enhance my work and my contribution to the STANDARDS project. CSULB is a pivotal institution in sociolinguistics, and is also part of a wider academic network of universities in California, home to cutting edge research in sociolinguistics. My work will therefore benefit considerably from the exceptional academic environment offered in California. While mainly centred on data analysis and academic presentations, the last third of my stay will be devoted to writing a joint a rticle with Dr Jaffe, as well as to planning a personal paper for another journal such as the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology.
