This third Innovation in Information Infrastructure workshop will directly address the second scientific priority area of VERDIKT: Communication technology and infrastructure. And theorizing information infrastructures will be relevant for addressing rese arch questions in all the three prioritized thematic areas: Social Networks, the Internet of Things and the Mobile Internet. The workshop programme will be based on key note speakers, panel debates and parallel tracks. A call for papers (abstracts) will b e issued by end of January 2014, and based on their review and acceptance tracks will be defined. The best papers will be given special consideration for a special issue on theorizing information infrastructures in a top ranked information systems journal . The last 1,5 days of the workshop will be dedicated to doctoral research training. We expect strong national participation, but we still believe that the majority will come from abroad, primarily from Europe (the UK in particular) and the US.
Building o n the two previous editions of the Innovation in Information Infrastructure workshops in Edinburgh, this workshop will recruit researchers engaged in the study of the large scale information systems which we term information infrastructures (II). Contempo rary ICT solutions are becoming increasingly complex, inter-dependent and large-scale. These changes raise the need to conceptualize ICTs as IIs rather than as Information Systems. Such IIs go well beyond existing systems in terms of the number of technol ogical components, organizations involved, users, data volumes, and interdependencies. These IIs emerge through the development of new solutions, and through the integration with other IIs, both new and old, across organizational and geographical boundari es. This present challenges that are not addressed adequately by existing research theories.
