EWS Eurasian Empires, Public Space/Sphere, and Collective Identities at the Threshold of Modernity

Tildelt: kr 89 999

This proposed series of two two-day workshops will be held at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and the Stockholm University Institute for Turkish Studies (Sweden) in the fall of 2014 and 2015, respectively. It aims to bring together leading scholars from the Nordic region and other parts of the world in order to deepen and extend debates and stimulate critical reflection on a range of theoretical and empirical issues relating to imperial transformation construed as a phenomenon of shifting socializat ion and group awareness from the fourteenth to the twentieth century. We intend to cover the travel and lodging expenses and provide meals for the invitees. The local hotel reservations will be arranged by the organizers of each workshop. The workshops will address the following questions: ? How can we conceptualize imperial elites and their group boundary fluctuations over time, based on changing requirements for membership as well as access to and execution of power? ? How can we retrieve and evalu ate the contribution of the common people into the social equation? ? How do we define public space and identify the processes that affect its extension/contraction as well as the parameters for inclusion/exclusion? At what point are we entitled to speak of a public sphere? ? How can we characterize multiple co-existing socially significant forms of belonging at the group level? Which cultural, political, and economic forces drove shifts in ties of attachment over time? ? What use can we make of the ?majo rity?/ ?minority? social categories in earlier centuries? When, how and why does their outlook and public manifestations change? ? When does the concept of citizenship become salient and/or statistically significant? Which factors drive this process?
