Challenges for the Ecology Movement: An Exchange in Between Academics and Activists

Tildelt: kr 0,29 mill.

The ecology movement deals with the biggest social and political threat of our time. Some of the most central challenges it faces are questions of ?green growth? and alternatives to the market, the possibilities and limitations of urbanization, the ethics of an ecological society and the link in between environmental and other social issues. These are the core questions of the conference which is to be held at the University of Oslo on September 25-26, 2014. The event involves both academics who are worki ng on these themes, as well as (paid and non-paid) activists from the ecology movement. We organize the event on the assumption that activists from the movements will benefit from a theoretical reflection on its positions and practice, and that academics will benefit from disseminating their research to these actors and to contend with the movement perspectives. As such, the conference attempts to open a venue for the co-production knowledge of environmental issues, which might also open up for the co-des ign of transdisciplinary research and development projects that deals with the issues raised. The conference will involve key-note speeches, panel discussions and paper sessions, as well as one more interactive group session. Since the conference gathers both academics and activists, we will strive to make the participants aware that they should emphasize the relationship in between theory and practice. To achieve this we also provide a cross-relation of the different sessions: a challenge that is raised in a keynote speech will also be discussed in one of the panels and be reflected upon more profoundly in the paper sessions. Also we will attempt to organize the conference in less traditional ways, by using ?speed paper? presentation and fish bowl discus sion to ensure that non-academics also benefit from the exchange of ideas. The keynote speech as well as panel discussions will be open events at the university, to also encourage non-paying student participants.
