Ergodic Theory and Combinatorics conference

Much recent work in ergodic theory, a branch of mathematics which studies the asymptotic behavior of measure preserving dynamical systems, has been motivated by the interactions with combinatorics. The field of ergodic Ramsey theory, where ergodic methods are used to prove Ramsey-theoretical results in combinatorics, started in the 1970's, and has become a very active and fast developing field of research today. The interplay between seemingly two different fields has been a rich source of new ideas and t echniques which have led to exciting developments in ergodic theory, combinatorics and number theory. An excellent example of the fruitfulness of this mix of ideas and methods is provided by the Green-Tao theorem on arithmetic progressions in the primes. The Pure and Applied Mathematical Analysis Research group at the University of Agder has been asked to organize a conference on ergodic theory and combinatorics in Norway in 2015, and the group apply here for partial funding to organize it at University of Agder in Kristiansand in June 2015. Conferences on the interplay between ergodic theory and combinatorics are held every other year in different countries. The aim of the conference is to bring together people working in ergodic theory and combinatori cs who are interested in the interplay between these two fields, in order to stimulate a fruitful exchange and dissemination of ideas. The conference will also provide an opportunity for younger mathematicians, both foreign and Norwegians, to be brought u p to date on new results and directions. It is expected that some of the world's leading researchers in the field will participate. A conference proceedings in a special peer-reviewed volume is planned. The contributions to this volume will provide an ac count of the current state of the art in this thriving area of mathematical research and will include a discussion of important directions of future investigations.
