Toward Proactive Sewer Asset Management (TPSAM)

Tildelt: kr 65 356

Sewer systems form one of the most capital-intensive infrastructure systems in the developed countries. Hence to safeguard proper functioning of the sewer systems over time, they need to be managed cost-effectively. Traditionally, municipalities have addr essed the design, construction, maintenance and operation of such systems with a reactive-based (run-to-failure) approach. This practice results in the inefficient use of limited funds, causing more frequent sewer failures that end in difficult and costly rehabilitations. To address this problem, an integrated approach is required, involving: (i) programing of inspection needs, (ii) condition assessment of sewers, (iii) establishment of standard condition rating system, and (iv) developing and updating pr ediction models for sewer condition. Both partners have long term experience and international recognition in the field of sewer asset management and more especially in the topics discussed above. They have good knowledge of their respective approaches, m ethods, results and this Aurora project will allow establishing a formal collaboration. The main interest expected from both partners is to develop common understanding and methods in order to elaborate common R&D proposals for Horizon 2020 and for FNS-FF N project. This collaboration aims also at promoting education and training by research with exchange of Ph-D and MSc students.
