Plugging-and-Abandonment (P&A) operations are performed in order to eliminate the risk of leakage whenever a well is to be permanently abandoned. More than 3000 wells are expected to undergo P&A operations in the coming years on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). In addition, between 150 and 200 new wells are expected to be added annually. The international demand for P&A operations is also large with many thousands wells in the Gulf of Mexico, UK and Brazil awaiting permanent P&A operations in the near future. The costs for performing P&A operations offshore are very high today. Statoil has estimated the P&A cost on the NCS to be approximately 876 Billion NOK over the next 40 years. The industry has therefore stated the need for new and more cost effective solutions in order to reduce the P&A costs. The well tubular removal concept presented in the project, performs the cutting and removal in a faster and cleaner way. The concept can potentially reduce the total operating time (cutting and retrieval) by a factor of 4 to 5 compared to conventional approaches. The concept can in addition be performed as a rigless wireline operation which will reduce costs even more. The concept is developed by Professor Bernt Sigve Aadnøy at the University of Stavanger (UiS), who has 40 years of industrial and academic experience, around 200 publications, several textbooks and patents. The project will built on both the academic and industrial knowledge and knowhow within well technology in the Stavanger region. UiS and IRIS will participate in the project.
