Probing the Atmospheric Surface Layer during the Arctic Night: The role of Turbulent Structures

Tildelt: kr 39 723

My master thesis investigates the role of turbulent fluxes in the surface energy balance over land during the Arctic night. The project combines results from a previous measurement campaign in the Bayelva catchment near Ny-Ålesund with state of the art turbulence modelling. The goal is to investigate the role of low frequency (large wavelength) contributions to the turbulent fluxes for the stable conditions that prevail during the Arctic night. In the proposed field work, I aim to procure measurements of surface air temperature and wind over a two week period in the winter of 2015 for representative areas of the Brøgger peninsula. These measurements will provide crucial boundary conditions for the model and provide a means of validating results.
