Go Figure: Visualizing Climate Change

FIGO-nettverket har hatt som mål å bidra til ein breiare kunnskapsbase for å møta utfordringar knytte til klimaendringar og relaterte miljøendringar. Prosjektet er eit nettverksprosjekt som fokuserte på den rollen bilete og andre former for visualisering har i klimaforsking, i forsking og politikkutforming på klimatilpassingsområdet, og i formidling av klimarisiko. Visuelle framstillingar av klimaendringar har fått relativt lita merksemd i arbeidet med å utvikle ein kunnskapsbase for robuste politiske avgjerdsler. Ofte representerer og forsterkar slike bilete særskilde måtar å forstå klimaendringar på, og dei er dermed kraftfulle verkty for å endre desse forståingsmåtane. Med "klimabilete" er meint visualiseringar av vitskaplege data, illustrasjonar av vitskapleg kunnskap, og bilete brukt i formidling ? frå illustrasjonar av klima-effektar i miljøet, scenarier for å unngå klimaendringar, av tilpassing til klimaendringar og illustrasjonar brukt i politisk aktivisme. Prosjektet har bygt opp eit nettverk på omlag 25 forskarar frå ulike fag, gjennom 2 arbeidsseminar (januar og november 2016) og ein internasjonal konferanse, S.net 2016 (oktober 2016).

Images of climate change has received comparatively little attention in the overall effort to develop a knowledge base for robust policy decisions. Go Figure: Visualizing Climate Change (FIGO) will contribute to a broader knowledge base for meeting challenges related to climate change and accomanying environmental changes by focusing on the roles of images in climate research, in climate communication, as well as in climate change policy. By climate images we mean visualizations of scientific data (measurements), illustrations of scientific knowledge, and disseminations and reinterpretations of these in science communication broadly understood, such as illustrations of climate change-related effects in the environment, scenarios for mitigation, adaptation, and political activism. The network, which consists of more than 20 researchers from a wide variety of fields, will provide a meeting place for the nascent field if climate image studies, and will serve as a platform from wich a comprehensive research project on climate images can be launched. The main activities of the project will be a workshop in 2015 and a conference in 2016.
