HealthInsight: Big Healthcare Data Analytics

Tildelt: kr 0,92 mill.

Huge quantities of complex and diverse data are generated everyday in healthcare institutions, including clinical documentation (diagnostics, lab data, imaging data, etc.), administrative data, activities and cost data, and R&D data from clinical trials. The power to query across these inter-related healthcare datasets and perform advanced analytics promises to revolutionize healthcare services. In the future, this type of analytics of complex healthcare data can help reduce medical errors, identify the most clinically effective and cost efficient treatments, improve monitoring of chronically ill patients, lead to the development of new drug treatments, and personalise medicine by matching appropriate treatment to patients. There are many challenges to address before big data can deliver major insights to the healthcare sector. In this year-long project, we will engage various stakeholder groups in innovative activities. We will hold workshops at Oslo University Hospital to gather together the healthcare community and understand their needs for advanced analytical tools. We will build a demonstration system to highlight potential applications of big data results. This project will work towards solving technical challenges, especially those surrounding incomplete and missing datapoints, thereby addressing data quality questions. In addition, we investigate the numerous legal, ethical, political, and social issues that surround the use of big data in healthcare. We have long term goals to develop innovative technology for analysing integrated health data, and will seek further funding following this pre-project. Our long-term funding strategy includes an application to the EU Horizon 2020 programme.
