The book explores graffiti pieces, rap songs and hip-hop movements, exploring how popular culture can provide spiritual expressions. Arguing that hip-hop spirituality is "a hybrid spirituality," lived and experienced in contexts of struggle and oppression, the author suggests an intersectional approach, highlighting race and gender. The author studies, analyzes and compares graffiti visualizing different ethnic and cultural heritages, memorial graffiti, rap songs reflecting Christian and Islamic traditions as well as the teachings of Hip-hop cultural movements such as Afrika Bambaataa?s Universal Zulu Nation. While most studies on hip-hop analyzes rap-texts, this book also analyzes visual representations of the culture, graffiti. Thus, the book is beautifully illustrated with photos of graffiti taken by the author during his stay as a visiting scholar at the Union Theological Seminary in New York and later visits.
