Participation of NOR-OPENSCREEN in the Nordic Chemical Biology Consortium (NCBC) and the ESFRI project EU-OPENSCREEN.

Tildelt: kr 0,25 mill.

Chemical Biology (CB) is defined as exploring biology by the use of small organic molecules and natural compounds. There is an increasing need for new bioactive compounds in many fields of Life Sciences and bioactive chemical compounds constitute the most common form of medical therapies and are also of great relevance within fields like agriculture, nutrition and biotechnology. Many chemical biology methods require highly specialised infrastructure and expertise that is not available in most laboratories. Thus, there is an increasing demand for chemical biology services provided by core infrastructures within a diverse and active Norwegian and Nordic collaboration. NOR-OPENSCREEN (www.openscreen.no) gathers Norway's expertise within chemical biology and marine bioprospecting and aims to become a national distributed infrastructure with open access to both academic users and users from industry. The main aim for the Norwegian network will be to develop and enable technologies for CB and marine bioprospecting, HTS, target validation as well as cancer drug sensitivity testing. The national network consists of partners from the UiO, UiB, SINTEF (Trondheim) and Marbio (UiT). Furthermore, NOR-OPENSCREEN is one of the EU-Openscreen partners. EU-Openscreen is aiming to integrate HTS platforms, chemical libraries, chemical resources for hit discovery and lead optimization in addition to a database containing screening results, assay protocols and chemical information thereby offering European researchers from academia access to the most advanced screening technology. The consortium has completed a three-year preparatory phase and is currently in the transition phase with negotiations to form a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). The EU-OPENSCREEN-ERIC is scheduled to be signed in early 2015 followed by a 1-year construction phase. In order to strengthen the CB research in the Nordic region a Nordic Chemical Biology Consortium (NCBC) has been formed.
